Computer Fixer Blog
The Right Business Software for Your Computer

There are more than 22 million small businesses in the U.S., says the latest U.S. Census figures. Each of them have the same business problems to solve. Software is one of the toolkits that every small business relies on to grow and become successful. Make sure you have the right software in your toolkit to manage your business.

Offline or Online?

With the growth of cloud computing, you have the choice of having software on your computer (offline), or accessing it in the cloud (online), notes Computer Weekly. Desktop software often has more features and flexibility. Cloud-based applications are less expensive and can be accessed by you or any of your staff from anywhere through a web browser. Sometimes cloud-based software is available for free with limitations.

Office Automation Software

Like all businesses, you need to create documents, analyze numbers and create presentations. Office automation tools come as a collection of tools to handle all of these tasks. The standard for many years has been Microsoft Office products, with Office 2013 being the current release of their tools. Businesses often have Word and Excel downloaded to company computers but now can access the tools through the cloud. The Office Web Apps allow you to access a version of these tools online through a browser. If you use Microsoft Skydrive to store your company's files in the cloud, then your staff can access them from anywhere at anytime.

Accounting Software

The Quickbooks suite by Intuit includes everything you need in order to manage the financial side of your business from processing payroll to invoice software. Intuit also offers their products in a desktop version that installs onto your computer as well as a cloud-based version. The cloud version gives you various options to start with, using the minimum tools you'll need for your business size, allowing you to grow into the product as your business grows.

With this suite, you can track expenses, pay bills, create job estimates and send electronic invoices. You can track inventory, process purchase orders, record contractor and employee time, and file payroll taxes. Quicken has incorporated all of the typical accounting and bookkeeping functions in this suite.

Collaboration Software

You need a place to store company information and documents where your staff has access to what they need in order to do their jobs. Microsoft Skydrive was mentioned above as a place to store documents online. Evernote Business is another tool that allows you to set up company libraries and work areas for your team. You can create individual project areas and assign people to them to work on tasks such as marketing and social media. Team notes can be linked to view a thread of communication. Save research from the web for future reference. This will help keep your staff connected with each other and the information they need to finish their projects.

Utility Software

There are a number of miscellaneous software products that will make your business more efficient:

Adobe Acrobat XI ( - This lets you create documents in PDF (portable document format) which make them available to anyone to review, even if they do not have the same office software.

Office Time ( - This is a time tracking tool to make sure that you have an accurate record of the time spent on customer projects. Analyze the data and send it to your invoicing software.

Zoho CRM - ( This lets you manage all of your customer information, and integrate it with your sales information.
